ALL Escorts except just a few of the 1st generation have a non interference engine. I have an '88 that has 492,000+ miles on it, it broke a timing belt once several years ago. I had it towed home, put it in the garage, lined up the timing marks, put a new belt on it and fired it up. I'm guessing that was about 200,000-250,000 miles ago.
