Fuel line to Filter connection

Hello All.
New not only to the site. I had not done more than put gas in my truck untill a few weeks ago. Added a 1993 Bronco to the family. I was told to just pull the fuel filter out of the line to replace. After much frustration I did get it out. Only to find out I need to use a tool. How do I know if I damaged the not so quick-connect line fittings?
