Default Tach not working after speedo cable replace

Hello,

I'm working on a 1995 Contour v6 2.5 automaic. I changed the speedo cable for a friend and after completion (that was no fun by the way) the tach now does not work.

When you turn the key on it slowly goes to 2800 rpms and stays there even after you start it. I've looked high and low and don't see any wires I've broke or knocked off. I just changed the portion of the cable in the motor compartment so I was not under the dash at all.

I'm not very fimilar with these cars so I don't really know where the tach even get it's signal or power. I'd guess through the PCM via a crank trigger since there is no distributor. The car runs and drives fine so I would think the crank sensor would not be bad or not working. And yes the speedometer does work now and I know that the tach worked before I started.

I was trying to do a good deed for a friend and now I've messed something up for the guy. He's very understanding about it but I feel terrible and don't want to pay the stealership for something that may be an easy fix.

Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob
