When the same drivetrain system is used in the Edge or Fusion, Ford calls it AWD. It's a so called "on demand" system and under normal driving conditions on dry pavement, torque is sent to the rear wheels every time you lightly accelerate from a stop. Even the Ford manual refers to it as AWD.
