At first I thought it was a good idea to have the cartridge filter as I thought it would be cheaper to replace than the spin on filter, but it doesn't turn out to be any cheaper, plus it seems that it would be a dirtier oil change to mess around with the cartridge and stuff. That is very odd that they would use two different oil filter types on the same setup. I don't know if you can remove the cartidge housing and switch to a spin on filter, you would think that the attachment base would be similar on the block to reduce production costs and the only difference is the housing.
My '09 V6 Escape was purchased on 11/11/08 and has a spin on type filter.
