I always stick my pinkie finger in it and feel for roughness or burrs. If you have a pilot shaft for clutch replacement you can test fit it to see how tight it is. If it is a roller bearing type I always look at the input shaft on the trans for any signs of wear. If all is well a little high temp lube in it and put it back together.
