Default 1997 Thunderbird front end noise

I just purchased a 1997 T-Bird with 134,000 miles on it! Runs great and is still in great shape. There is one issue with the car that I would like to diagnose before I start replacing things. When I go over bumps or rough spots in the road, the left and right front end makes a clunking sound. When I am outside the car and I move the front end back and forth, I get the same clunking sound. The individual I bought it from said it was the struts, but there are more to the front end than just the struts. Does the top plate need to be replaced or just the strut bearings themselves? Any assistance anyone could provide in helping me diagnose this problem would be greatly appreciated. The auto shop here on base wants almost 600 dollars to replace both strut assemblies and I know that I can do the job myself, just want to make sure that I am replacing the right things. Again, thank you for your time and consideration.
