Default Probe Power Steering line

my 89 probe started leaking power steering fluid. i found the leak and fixed it with 3/8 rubber high pressure transmission line(which 2 mechanics i know reccomended) . after i fixed the first leak i found a second behind the fire wall. now the new hose has a hole. heres my question. when i replaced the line i ended up shortening it by about 8 inches, so is it the shortened line that is causing too much pressure so the hose fails, or is it that the 3/8 HP tranny hose isnt strong enough like suggested? it not, what is a cheap alt. to regular steering lines? they are pricey and a pain in the arse to install?? thanks for reading!
