Default Fairly serious engine concern

I have had my 2002 Windstar for almost 2 years now and it only has 67k on it. The van has run fine most of the time, but has always been a bit tempermental when it rains.........rought idling at stops, wants to act like it is going to die. Just a week ago, I was driving it and i heard what sounded like a metallic "klink" under the driver's side and the check engine light came on and started flashing and the van felt a little weak on acceleration. It all steadied itself out, but the CE light stayed on. Now, it continues to do this same thing occasionally. Sometimes the "klink" is there and others it is not when this occurs, and it seems to like to do it most when I am headed up a hill or on entrance to a highway when I will be accelarating a little harder. Double-checked engine oil and transmission fluid. Both seemed on the low-end of OK, but neither one looks like it requires immediate attention. Could this be an engine problem, a tranny problem, or something else. What would be the suggested course of action on this one?

Thank you
