The 300 has no breathing above 4000 rpm, I doubt it will turn 5000 in neutral, and has a torque curve that starts about 1200 rpm and and drops off about 3600 rpm, the only reason you will need lower gearing is because your power is very low with this engine, about 120 actual horsepower, you can get the appropriate fuel pump an most parts store a 5-7 psi universal electric will work fine if you have a carburetor. the bell housing is very different, you will need a 300 transmission or at least a bell housing if it is a stick. I have owned two one tons with the 300 in them and you will find your top speed to be about 75 mph, limited by your horsepower, about 50 less than the diesel. fuel economy about 11-12 mpg and eventually you will get one with a v10 like I did and get better mileage and savor going 75 with a trailer instead of a power limited 45 mph. In short, unless you run empty everywhere you are likely to regret that 300 in a one ton, if you want a 300 get a f150 with one in it.
