Default Electrical Problem

I'm wondering if anyone can give me some tips on what might be causing an electrical problem I'm having. My son apparantly turned the ignition key on yesterday to check the clock and left it there for a few minutes (not the accessory position, the ignition on position, but without cranking the engine). When my wife got in the van, she was able to drive it home about 6 miles, but nothing electrical was working and van conked out coming into the driveway. The battery was completely dead, so I charged it. Once charged it cranked and ran fine, but after a short trip the battery was drained again. Also, ther is no increased voltage across the battery when it's running.

So, did the alternator somehow get shot? Is there an ignition module that's messed up?

Any ideas would be appreciated. Also, if you know anything about how hard it is to replace whatever needs replacing, please let me know.

thanks
