Default shift bypass button, now can't re-engage shifter

Ok, some how i managed to quickly park and turn off my escape also removing the key while it was still in reverse. The when i was ready to go it wouldnt start because automatic cars will only start in park or neutrel with the brake depressed. And i couldn't shift out of reverse with the car off. So i found in the manual how to use a bypass switch (top of steering wheel) with the shift lever to disengage the transmission and shift into neutral. Now the escape starts but i cant reengage the gear shift to actually get in drive. Holy geez! I 've fought with this for 2 hours and i give up. I took the plastic off the steering column and everything, even disconnecting the battery for 10 mins to reset anything electrical. The shift lever is just limp and moves freely between all gears with the car on or off.

Anyone any any idea how to fix this???!?!
