Default 94 4.0L V6 automatic transmission problems

My ranger in a 94 4.0L V6 SXT 4x4 5-speed auto
just recently it has had trouble shifting into 2nd and I've had significant power loss.
It's also been making questionable down-shifts
when I try manually shift 2nd doesn't lock into place going or stopped, it goes to first
wondering if anyone has any experience in this or any ideas to help
