Default my 98 4x4 4.0 promblems

my ranger is having trouble in the trsnsmission area
when you put it in reverse it wants to snacht the rear end and when you put it in drive it wants to putter and spit but when you get to 20 mph it runs fine
but it won't shift gears and it very bothersome and some other rangers guys say its the spark plugs and wires need to be changed cause the tranny has to have the right amount of power to swicth gears .then some people say its different things so i need some anwsers.
