Some of the 98+ radios have had problems with weak/fading displays, and it is a problem with the power circuit board. Apparently some of the joints where it is soldered together crack. This might be what is causing the problem with your radio. You could open up your radio and try to see if there is anything obviously wrong
Beyond that, I can't think of what it could be.
