Default Focus FM Radio stops tuning stations

I have googled this and searched these forums, and come up empty, so apologies if I overlooked something. A while back the FM tuner in my '02 Focus started losing reception after it had been on for a few minutes. Whether I turned on the FM radio when I started the car cold or waited till I'd been driving a while, after a few minutes the stations would all fade to static, and scanning would not find any stations at all. The car went in the shop for another issue and when it came out, the stations all worked -- till the next time it went in the shop, after which the problem recurred. The mechanics have no idea what to make of it.

Basically the FM radio is unusable. I have seen a reference to this in some other place, and the recommendation was to clean the antenna connector on the roof -- did that, no help. Besides, seems like if it were a bad antenna connection, it'd never work. Any ideas?
