Exclamation 1992 mustang lx

i have a 92 mustang with 4 cyl. auto. the tranny slips going from 2nd to drive and sometimes from drive to OD. what would cause this? could i rebuild it to solve to problem or do i have to replace the tranny completly. i have two of these cars same year same motor just one is a hatchback and one is convertible. the tranny in the convertible is gone 3rd and OD is out of it and reverse only works when its warmed up.. im putting the a4ld out of the hatchback into the convertible and converting the hatch into a V-8 any suggestions on the a4ld problems?
