My Ranger did the same thing. We removed the motor and rebuilt the bottom end. The camshaft syncronizer gears were gone. I don't know if the oil pump locked up and it wore off the gears or if it just something that happened. Now we have the motor back in, but cant get it to crank because of an electrical problem.
