Default $x$ drive question

I have a 4x4 350 v10 pickup with the manual locking hubs.
Today was the first day I have used the 4x4. I am not sure if the hubs are to go forward or back.
I put it in 4x4 by the gear by the foot petals. But how do I know when it;s in 4x4.

I have always had 4x4 that you just put in gear or push a button. I got stukc today and am not sure if it was in 4x4 drive or not. Darn mudd, I hate it.
I have no owners manual with this trcuk, otherwise I can look it up.
