hmmm, never heard of VAF, I was thinking along the lines of IAC Idle air control valve, or possibly TPS throttle position sensor I had similar problems with my bronco with a flaky MAP sensor. OR a biggie... vacuum leaks.
Before pulling codes one should check for vacuum leaks.
Checking for vacuum leaks, and pulling codes are probably the best starting points.
