Default revs problem

hi, there i have a 97 1.6 escort lx. which for some strange reason when im driving the car it with rev automatily to 3000 revs, without me even touching the petrol pedel, regardless of it being in or out of gear. its like the car is trying to drive itself. any help much appreciated thanks
