Default cracked axle

Has anyone ever experienced a cracked rear axle on a 2000 ford windstar sel?
I discovered the defect just prior to a long road trip. Ford was very generic in there reply to this defect and I was just wondering if others are being notified or warned of this very dangerous and poor design. There was no known event that could have created this crack. The replacement cost was $800.00, claimed on my insurance. Maybe if insurance companies start seeing multiple claims, then Ford might accept responsibility for this deficeincy. The van has 85,00 miles, garage kept and in good condition (no rust), secondary vehicle.
