Default car wont start

I went to start my 1989 ford festiva last night and it started, stuttered, and turned off. I then tried again right after it shut off and it started right up. Today, I went to start my car and and would crank and crank but would not turn over. After reading some threads im quessing it is either the fuel pump or the fuel filter and I was wondering if there was a quick fix or an easy way to check, if so how do I do it.
