From what I've heard, the bolts holes that the side steps use for mounting are the same that secure the High Voltage cables on the '07 and prior FEH/MMH models. The concern is a side impact that would possibly drive the side step into damage to the cables and electrical injury.
The weight of the side steps is a small issue, but the wind drag would be more of a concern to me as far as mileage. I own a '05 FWD FEH and a new '09 FWD FEH Limited that is fully loaded except for the side steps. My concerns with the side steps was MPG and the fact that there is only a few inches below getting in and are not used as steps to get in.
Nice mud flaps would be cheaper IMO and there is a new rear tire spoiler for the '09 that increases MPG you may want to consider mounting.
