Question 99 escort trans. slip and rough idle

Hi. I wanted to know what could be causing my mothers escort transmission to slip. It's an auto. with 104 thousand miles. Some days it's fine, others not. It will skip 1st gear and go right to 2nd. It shifts fine otherwise. She's had the fluid changed twice. Sometimes when it shifts in 1st, it will shift with a slam like or just when you come to a stop. Also, one night the lights dimed and went off and the car almost stalled, but came right back and it idles rough sometimes and sometimes smooth. Any thoughts???
