Default remote starter & PATS

I'm considering getting a remote starter installed. I know that it uses a PATS bypass module to overide the anti-theft system during remote starting, but does it also bypass the PATS during regular key startup. If so, does that mean that I can use a non-encrypted key (off the shelf cut) during regular key starting or do I still need to use the encrypted key
