Hey Scotty - the exact same thing happened to our 97 last week. My son installed the stereo and the situation happened on the first night. He said he smelled smoke also. I put the original stereo in and that one still works, but there is an overcharging condition during fast idle - around 3000 rpm. I took the aftermarket stereo apart and there is a burned out resistor and transitor - I assume it is the blue wire output that turns on the amp. It wasn't protected from the over-voltage. The service manual has an analysis process for finding the cause. Can you tell me though, how long had your aftermarket stereo been in your vehicle? |
