I went through a similar scenario with my son-in-law a couple of years ago on a Chevy product. Bad head gasket. Pumped a lot of coolant while driving home from college. Would not start once it was shut off (not unusual).
He had the head gaskets replaced (not by me), but wound up with a rod/main bearing less than 6 months later.
I talked to a "pro" and he said that was not unusual. About 50% of engines that get coolant in the oil from a bad head gasket will have a bearing failure within a year or so.
