Exclamation 98 ford contour, crank pully bolt removal

Hey I new here. first timer posting.

I am working on my car, One of the tensioners broke, car is out of time.

First question since my duel overhead cam is not working can some one please advise how I can make sure #1 piston is in the compression stroke.
(In other words if piston is in compression stroke) so I won't be 180 out.

second is the bolt in the crankshaft pully right hand or left hand that mother is tight, I want to make sure I'am going the right direction.
and any suggestion how to hang on to pully tried using wife stepping on brakes & manual tranny in gear no luck.

this is a tough car to work on.
any help would be great.
