I can help you on this, but I need to answer two questions.

First, what year is the truck.

Second, if you pry back just enough on the timing cover, you can see the edge of the timing belt. When you do this, do you seen lines or ribs on the back part of the belt (flat part)?

If it is 5 years old, or has ribs on the back of the belt, its time to replace it. It is a very easy job on a 2.3L, should take about 1 - 1.5 hours with hand tools, 30 mins at a shop.
