Default Problem After Replacing Battery????

Hello,
I've got a 2002 Truck with a v8 triton gas engine and after installing a new battery, I would experience light intermittent sputter / stutter / hiccups while driving at about 25 to 30mph? Truck idles smooth and runs great at high speeds, but will occasionally hiccup while in low gear. Has anyone else experienced this and is it something I should be concerned about? I read in my owner's manual that after replacing the battery, my truck needs to run a couple of thousands of miles to get back to normal. The computer will reprogram itself after a couple of thousands of miles. Is this for real? Anyone experienced this?
Thanks!
