Default uneven wear on 2002 Taurus

I have a 2002 Taurus and I went to check the brakes yesterday and found that the driver side pads were only about half worn but the passanger side is nearly gone. What could cause this and what can I do to fix it.

The calipers are supposed to slide on either slides or pins, and they are supposed to be lubricated with a special high temp grease. Possibly one side is binding.

The calipers not only compress the pads against the rotor, but they also function to release some pressure from the rotor when one releases the pedal. If the rubber boot is torn the caliper should be replaced. Fortunately they are suprisingly inexpensive.

If the boot is torn you may have a rusted or pitted caliper piston, I would just replace the caliper.

Yeah, what he said ! Should be under $50 for a rebuilt.

Splurge and get new mounting bolts/pins. This is the thing that caliper slides on.

Also don't forget the special grease for those pins !

Hey guys you forgot to add in about being sure to bleed the brakes, and how!

BTW, if there was air in one of the calipers, that would give uneven wear too.

Get the rotors turned too so the pads can seat properly.
