Default rear air suspensions compressor problem

I have a 98 XLT Explorer manufactured for export (I bought it in Germany and the rear suspensions have an "export" label).
The drive recently started to feel rather wobbly, expecially at low speed (25 mph).
I had noticed that the compressor for the automatic level alignment does not go on anymore when I change the weight in the back and I guess that this could have an impact on the drive stability. When I switch the auto level feature off from the trunk, the warning light in the dashboard lights up, so I guess that the electronic part should be ok.
Is there any way to test the compressor or the auto level circuit (also called auto ride control, if I am not wrong) ?
Does anybody have the original compressor part number ?
