Default ABS activating on dry pavement/ 2000 Explorer 4wd

When I apply the brakes on dry pavement I occasionally feel the ABS kick in.

I unplugged/disconnected both front wheel sensors and as expected the ABS warning lamp illuminates on the dash. I road tested the Explorer and the brakes worked perfectly execpt without ABS function.

I recently went for NJ state inspection so, I reconnected the ABS wheel sensors so that the ABS lamp wouldn't be illuminated. Unfortuneltly it failed the "skid test" due to LF brake failure.

Is it possible to have a bad wheel sensor that DOESN'T trigger an ABS warning light on the dash?

thanks......

yes,it appears the sensor is working at least alittle and maybe dropping the signal at low speed causing the abs actuation. There could be a tire size diference(different brand, worn, etc.)A silpping, cracked or damage tone ring.Have you had it scanned for abs codes? The scanners at parts stores do not read abs codes for the most part.

Thanks for your reply.

The tires are fairly new and correct for the vehicle. Is the "tone ring" built into the wheel hub? I had repalced a wheel hub a few years ago thinking that the bearing was worn (causing a loud humming noise) Turned out it was the tire!

Unfortunately, the inspection station report doesn't provide ABS codes. I'm trying to avoid taking it to a repair shop.

Remove the sensors and check for corrosion (replace if excessive), clean both halves of the electrical connector, pack with silicon dielectric grease and re-assemble.

thanks for your reply....

From what I can see, the LF wheel sensor is built into the wheel hub. I can remove the hub but, will that gain me access to the sensor so that I can check it for corrosion?

I've noticed that auto parts stores sell the complete wheel hub and ABS sensor with the wiring harness together as one assembly

I have a 2000 ford explorer 4 wheel drive. That has the ABS light on. The only time I notice a problem is when I start off at a cold start and apply the brake to shift it from park to either R or D, it will make that activated ABS noise for a very short time then I have no problem with the brakes after that. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be causing this and suggestions on how to fix? Is this something i should get into the shop right away, or can it wait?

thanks

Many things can cause the light to be on. You need a special diagnostic code reader to find out waht the error code is.

Not critical, but your ABS is not working at all when the light is on. This means when you really need ABS, it won't be there for you !

LMC is now selling just the sensors!! under 30 bucks. I would try that cause a new hub is costly! They do come out of my 97 explorer with a 6mm allen.
