Ford should bring back the Pantera Freeman Thomas is a biggie at Ford. Not sure what his title is, but he is in Advanced Design, maybe head of it.
I ran across Freeman at the Cars & Coffee Sat. morning meet in Irvine and got him to sit down for a second while I pitched my idea:
I figure the Ford GT frame needs only minor changes to pass the future laws,
so my suggestion was that Ford buy the DeTomaso Pantera name from Mrs. DeTomaso, who is not doing anything today except raising prize winning dogs. The company started by her and her late husband is shuttered, and the cars and parts mostly sold off.
Then they could come up with a modern Pantera body and market the car as the Pantera GT from the Lincoln Mercury showrooms.
When Ford discontinued the Ford GT with the '06 model they said the reason they were discontinuing it was some laws that would have required them to change the car's shape but I think they really just wanted to keep the GT exclusive (at 4038 cars produced). I think they could overcome those laws if they wanted to.
Freeman said that "Ford brand has plenty of heritage to choose from," which was his gentle way of letting the air out of my trial balloon |
