Try checking your amperage again, but this time, unhook your alternator's large wire, and the wires for the regulator. See if you get any dramatic change in current draw.

ok started over read some more of the forum
opened the drivers door waited 40 min check amp draw was 4.07amps
disconnected alt wire from underhood fusebox no change can hardly see
alt let alone regulator wires to disconnect without taking half the car apart
how important is that when the alt was check by a professional machine

why is the amp draw 4.07 with the door open and (no interiorlights on)
then with the door closed yesterday and the draw being half an amp
im an old gm mech fords seam to be difficult to diag.

I don't always trust machines that check altenators, until they are on the bench. I don't mean you to take half the car apart, I figured you could get to it pretty easy.
