Default 2000 Ford Taurus Autolamps not working right

My auto lamp system goes on when its still very bright out. I'm not sure exactly why. Is there a light sensor somewhere thats inadvertantly covered? I cant seem to find one though. I'm not sure if there's something wrong with the wiring or there's a short or something. I noticed this a few days after I was rear ended and pushed into the car in front of me so I would like to know if that has something to do with this: my hood was dented in some and my rear bumper was damaged

Any help is appreciated
