After re-reading Phantom's post... Your mechanic should be able to use a good basic cable from a parts store and make it work as long as the little junction block isnt to bad.
I guess the $500 was for an alternator, cables and installation.
So the answer is yes. A battery cable is a battery cable.
Let us know how you make out.

My question is... When I go to Auto Zone, are all cables (length aside) the same? Or will I have to know something specific about the make of it, or the voltage it can handle or anything?

Going to try to get this done over the weekend so at the very least I can narrow it down... argh!

Yes, they are pretty much the same.

If you give the person behind the counter the year make and model of your car they should be able to fix you up.

When messing with battery cables there is one rule to always remember

Always, ALWAYS, disconnect the ground cable first and re-connect the ground cable last

Of course. But thank you so much for telling me that, because if I didn't know that, I would indeed be screwed.

When I gave the guys last time the make and model of my car for this, they were baffled and told me I had to go to the dealer. I'll try again.

Thanks guys! I'll let you know how it goes!!
