Question Replacing Alternator

Hi, i drive a 2001 ford escort zx2. The battery light came on, and i took it to Checkers, they said my alternator was bad. I am currently trying to replace the alternator, and i am having some trouble removing the bottom two wires attached to the alternator. The top one was a set of wires that pulled out when you unhooked it. the middle one looks kind of like a telephone jack, and it is kind of stuck, i am afraid to force it out, due to the damage i might cause. The bottom one is a weird bulbous cover attached to a red piece of ??plastic? that goes into the alternator, i cannot see it very well. If you could offer up any suggestion as to what to do that would be great.
Also should i undo the bolts first, then take out the electrical stuff, or undo the wiring, and then take out the alternator
thanks,
Danny
