| Ford Ranchero stuck in 1rst gear..... Hey guys, my little Ranchero's transmission is stuck in 1rst gear. It's a 3 speed manual transmission on the column. The column shifter isn't in the 1rst gear position, it's just kind of flopping around and won't engage into any of the gears, and it seems to be locked into 1rst gear. Any ideas on what it could be other than linkage which i already checked? |

| Could be a worn or damaged selector fork in the transmission. Try accessing the transmission shift lever(s) at the transmission and levering it out of gear.

| Also have somebody move the shifter around to see what it does while you are looking at all the linkage. I am guessing something popped off or broke if it is not moving the linkage on the transmission.

| Hey fellas, thanks for your input...i put it to use and got'r fixed! what i did was disconnect both of the shift rods from the transmission shifting arms and put my transmission into nuetral by hand, and put bricks behind all 4 wheels about a foot back so that when I found neutral, it wouldn't crush my ass! lol
I found neutral, sure enough, it rolled back and stopped on the bricks thank god. Kind of a redneck manuever, but i had no help and i've cheated death before, either that or death wasn't paying attention. Then, i reconnected the shift rods and cotter pinned 'em in place. I drove around the block and got to shift in all gears in and out fine, but it's sloppy and needs adjustment for sure to keep it from binding again like it did. It's raining and it's dark out, so i'll fine tune the shift rods tomorrow and get it dialed in (for another three months) lol. Thanks for your help guys, hopefully this post will help someone else in the future as this is a common problem with the Falcons/Rancheros due to the hokey shifting rod setup coming loose, bending, or breaking. |

| Glad to hear you got it fixed.
So you said it was all connected but it was binding only, nothing loose or broke?

| Mark,yeah all was connected, but i think what caused the problem was one of the shifter rods came loose at the adjusting nut and slipped out of position, then the linkage got all bound up. I'm getting ready to go outside and dial it in this morning, and hopefully it'll be fixed for a while anyway. Thanks again guys-
