1995 Escort manual trans. On occasion will not go into first gear. When I turn off the engine, I can get it in first. Other gears are working good. Does not do it all the time. Help!

I was wondering if this has a hydraulic clutch or cable operated? Have seen weak hydraulics cause shifting problems When it does not go into gear try to pump the clutch pedal several times then try putting into gear Does that make any difference?
