Exclamation '96 explorer xlt 4.0L 4x4 problem

Hey everyone im having an unusual problem with my front end when 4x4 is engaged. I have 4x4 but it only works when im moving but from a dead stop i have no 4x4. Its almost as if the front end is slippin or sumthing. When i but too much torque on the front end it lets go then grabs once i stop. I also have that 4-auto instead of 4-high and when i use 4-auto, both the 4x4 and 4x4 low lights on my dash blink alternately. This obviously indicates a problem. Ive tried everything to my knowledge and now im looking for any advice possible. I was told that it was possibly a solenid issue but i dont think there is a solenoid in the front end.
