Default 390 ci or something else?...

I have a 1968 F100 Ranger that I'm in the process of trying to rebuild. But I have a tiny problem...I have no idea what kind of motor is sitting in my engine bay...I've tried to find the cast number stamped on the block, but so far, to no avail...I've been told it was everything from a small-block 302 to a big-block 390...The VIN on my door says the original motor was a 390 BB...I've also been told by the guy that I bought it from that the motor isn't the original...I have a picture of the motor, without the air cleaner on it, I'm hoping someone can positively identify this motor for me...

The second picture might be a little blurry...

Looks like a 390 or a 360.See how the intake is part of the head under the valve cover.

Big Block for sure. The engine does look like the 360 or the 390. Check this web site
FORDification.com - Ford FE Engine Block Casting Numbers
This is what I found---
C7ME-A '?? 330MD c.i.d. Medium Duty Truck
'67-'70 428 c.i.d. 428-4V, Police Interceptor, Cobra Jet

its an FE, 330,352,360,390,427,428

I'd pop the valve covers and check out what the drivetrain, and if you can see any casting numbers on the top of the heads.

If you go to http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/fb/full.asp?page=9 you can look through the online catalog and on the 9th page they have engine codes. I looked up the numbers you posted and it doesn't match any except a 292, but that was for an earlier year. If I remember right it is the 8th digit that is your engine code.

Ok, thanks to everyone for the posts, but now I'm royally confused...It LOOKS like a 390, but the engine code says 330, or 428...How do I know for sure without tearing my engine down completely? Does that mean the block itself is a 428, and it was just built as a 390, or how does that work? From what I got from Fordification.com, it's a 1967 Mercury(?) Engine...I have little to no experience with engines...I'm mostly a body worker...Again, thanks for all the help so far...
