1994 Taurus shuts off

My friend has a 1994 Taurus. It would start and run fine but when it warmed up it would "jerk" (whiplash material) and shut off. It would start back up right away.
She spent $300 in PARTS replacing everything a friendly mechanic could think of that may cause the problem to no avail. She can't remember what all was replaced but the fuel filter and mass air flow were replaced for sure.

Someone told her it may be a modulator switch inside the transmission...

So the car set for several months. We recently moved it to a new location 20 miles away and it ran fine but every time she left up on the throttle it stalled. After sitting it started easily, no black or white smoke, sounds smooth as long it is above idle speed. Let off the gas and it shuts off.

What is going on here???

Can't find any vacuum leaks.
What does that modulator switch do?

You may want to check if idle air control valve is stuck closed or open.

As far as I know the 94' isn't equipped with a modulator valve. Instead I think that uses a set of solenoids to shift and the PCM to control the shifts.

Personally I'd run the car by a trust worthy transmission shop after you get the engine to run correctly.

That might be tougher than fixing his stalling problem. I priced a rebuilt AOD at every trans shop in the book and to the shop, they all wanted 2500 dollars for a rebuilt unit with one year warranty.

I ended up calling an old friend of mine who repairs cars and he was able to provide the same transmission installed for 1000.00 parts and labor.

Makes me wonder if it might be impossible to find a trust worthy tranny shop.
