Question Enging general questions

I have a 76 F-250 that belonged to a good friend that pass on years ago.
went through the family and then was parked several years ago.
I want it to run again.
Has a blown 300-6, Have another 300-6 ?

Where to look on the block to find out engine years and ci's

The oil dip stick on the enging I just got is in the oil pan,
the one in the pickup comes out of the block by the oil filter.
can anyone tell me when and why the difference.

the engine is supposed to be a good runnerout of a 78-9 van
I like the dipstick coming out of the pan, but the pan has a bad gash
and will need replaced, where is the best place to find one.
Wrecking yards are 100 miles away.

Will have several questions as this goes on I'm sure

It should have a "engineering number" on the side.

It'll probably be like D5TE, D8TE, or D9TE. Maybe something else. The first Letter represents the decade. C for the 60's, D for the 70's, E for the 80's, and F for the 90's. The second spot tells the year of the decade. The third tells what application the part was engineered for. The fourth tells what group the part is for.

There is usually a dash and two digits. This is usually for an update in design.

There are also date codes, I have to get the book out to read those, if you get em for me, I'll try to decipher them.

Yeah the would be a 75' engineering number. There may also be a four digit number on the block, see if you can find that.

Smile

After some scrubbing I found ( 5K6 |/ )after the D5TE-8015-AA

and on the valve cover D6TE-9C485-CTA
applicable to 76 model

That was about all that could be read on the tag.

I'm confused about the change in oil dip stick location,
where was it supposed to be on the pickup ?
out of the pan or out of the block by the oil filter?
And what years made the change

thanks

I'm not sure about the year, but we had a truck that had a swapped motor with both dipsticks, no big deal, just had to make sure we read the right one.

The 5k6 probably stands for 1975 (the 5), December (k is the 11th letter, eleventh month), and 6 for the 6th of the month. That is the date the block was cast.
