Default 96 Escort tranny problem

HI, new member here.
96 escort 119,000 miles, auto trans. Bought new and have never had a problem. Till now. Wife was driving down the interstate and all of a sudden it was like you put the car in neutral. No noise, leaks, or anything unusual. Motor just revved up and that was it. Will not move at all. Can a trans go out just that quick? Seems like there would have been some kind of warning sign.
Thanks for any thoughts you may have on this matter.

Patrick

Inspect the transmission fluid and make sure it's at the mark... If thats ok make sure you didn't snap a CV joint they can break w/o noise. Jack up the front end and spin the wheels one at a time to see if it spins the axles to the tranny... If the axles spin too im afraid you need a new transaxle...

Fluid is full. Raised front end and if I spin one wheel it makes the other one turn the opposite way. I assume the axles are ok, right? The question is: should they turn with the tranny in park? Because they do.

Thanks, Patrick
