I'm seeing gasoline running out of the vent tubes of my carb and the gas is collecting in the oil pan. Not the first time this has happened, the other time I came outdoors on a winter day to find the snow melted under and around my black car. Gasoline was dripping from the oil pan/blcok seal.
Jacked the front of the car into the air and even with the front of the car higher then the gas tank gas was pouring out of the disconnected fuel line (at the fuel pump.)
This suggests to me that the vent for the gas tank is plugged, but where is the open end of the vent?
SIZE="5"]I believe the problem started about ten years ago when I hit some debris in a construction siite. Had to replace the fuel pump as the housing was damaged. The above incident happened a few weeks later. Since then I have noticed a strong secent of gas inside the car but this current problem just started whe the daytime temps hit 90 degrees a few days ago.[/size]
Needless to say running the engine with gasoline in the oil leads to a seized engine and this car is my only transportation.
I agree. The car is 23 years old and the carb has been touched only once, Ford issued a recall for a "fix" in 1986, never obtained good gas milage after they "fixed" whatever it was (dropped from 28 mpg on the interstate to 21 mpg).
But a sinking float or bad needle/seat doesn't explain the pressure in the tank after the key is turned off.
Did find a fracture in the hose connected to the intake of the fuel pump last night, may be the source of the fumes.
I'll be pulling the carb for inspection this evening.
Just that age=old mechanical fuel pump problem, the diaphram had a hole in it and was pumping raw gasoline directly into the crank case. Thursday I managed to pump $25 worth of gas out of the tank in 22 miles, car stopped running after I put another $10 in the tank.
Had problems finding a "antique" fuel pump (read "mechanical") and it took two days for one to be shipped. of course that was cheap, as the newer Mustangs use $339 electric pumps, mine cost $29.
