 98 Windstar Shifting Problems

I have a 98 Windstar that has had a Plethora of problems, but I won't part with it, as it was passed down from my late father.
The major problem of late, is the transmission, randomly shifts down from highest gear (freeway speed) down to 2nd gear. At first I thought I was putting strain on the vehicle in the excessive heat and having A/C cranked. Just a coincidence.
I thought it may be a sensor, as sometimes, if I turn the vehicle off for a while, go back, it works again. But again, this may be a coincidence too.
It is not safe enough to take on any highway trips as one never knows when it will go. Totally random.
Can anyone shed some light?
