They are underneath the panel on the valve cover 6 7mm bolts then you have to remove the coils and there they are.

Found them, thank you. Okay I think I have a bigger problem. My plug chambers have oil in them. I don't notice any oil leaking, so where did it come from? What could cause that?

you will need to change the vavle cover gasket, some of the 3.9 in the LS and Thunderbird have a recall(extending the warranty coverage) 07m07 on coils plugs and gaskets.Check with your local dealer to verify coverage you will need to give them the vin number.

I have a similar problem as described in the thread "Cylinder layout for 99 Grand Marq 4.6L", updated just a few minutes ago. In my case, the oil isn't pooling, but the boot and the plug (above the threads) are wet with oil. When I first took the boot off, I used a flashlight to look in the well before I took the plug out, so I know it isn't pooling (yet).

Is it just a matter of time before the "floodgate" opens? How much would you expect an independent shop to charge to replace it? I'm not sure I'm up for that job.

I am a relative novice to car repair. I've replaced plugs & wires and this year I learned how to replace brakes and did so on three vehicles. It looks like I'll be learning how to replace the exhaust system very soon. "Back in the day" I'd been known to replace radiator or two and a water pump once, but that was before you'd have to take apart the entire front end to do so. (Shoulda kept the '74 Cougar with the 351.)
