Default 2001 ford mustang automatic gear select will not go out of park

I have a 2001 ford mustang v6 auto with 81 k for miles. The other day the button for on the gear shift will not go in. How can I remedy this problem?

sounds like the shift interlock is not working properly.

check fuses #17 and #35 both are 15Amp.

do your brake lights work?? if not, check fuse #33 15Amp and check the Brake pedal postion switch

Thank you for your advice. I will check that out. I thought the shift interlock might be the problem, but it seems like the button you press in is sticking and it was taking a few minutes, literally to manipulate the button in, then when I moved the leather wrapping up and down it seems like it permantly lodged it.

if you believe the leather boot jammed it then take the boot and trim off and see if it is blocking/jamming it.
